3 states have marijuana initiatives on the ballot for 2008. California, Massachusetts, and Michigan are the three states that may realize the truth about this harmless and even more helpful plant. When will the rest of America catch up?
California, as you may already know, has made the medicinal use of marijuana legal. That was prop. 215. Now comes prop. 5 for the Non-violent Offender Rehabilitation Act. This would put more emphasis on rehab over jail. This is great on its own, because why should we waste tax dollars of something that is doing no harm to anyone but the user. Not to mention, if you want someone to quit drugs, jail isn’t the place. Believe it or not, prisons are full of drugs. This act would also take minor possession of marijuana from a misdemeanor to a non-criminal infraction.
Opposition to Prop 5 is coming from the California Prison Union and the states Beer and Beverage distributors.
In Massachusetts voters decide on Question 2, the decriminalization of marijuana. This would take one ounce of cannabis from being a criminal offense to a civil offense with a fine of $100. This will be the first state to do so since ‘01 when Nevada did so. This would also be the first to do so by voter initiative.
Michigan is voting for prop. 1, which is a medical marijuana act. This would be the 13th state to enact medical marijuana laws. 67% of voters say they will vote to see this come to fruition. We can anly wait and see if the people get out vote.
Obviously the majority of Americans feel the laws on marijuana are outdated and need some changing. OUr politicians will not do this, so it is up to us. If your local politician doesn’t agree, don’t vote. Tell them you won’t be voting for them if they don’t change their views and help. Tell your friends who not to vote for. Tell them who to vote…
But most importantly go vote. Your vote will count because of the vast amount of people “watching”. You can’t cheat us a third time. Bush was enough. Check out videothevote.org to see who is watching…
